Sister Wisdom + the Warming Art of Hygge
Written by Theresa
Inspired by Heather + Katie’s conversation in Episode 7 of Season 2 of the INTERWOVXN Podcast
Sisters Heather and Katie reach back to their childhoods in the 80s and 90s sharing with us pieces of nostalgia and forgotten memories. Princess Diana’s wedding, hours of imaginative play, renting video tapes (Cape Fear, Silence of the Lambs, and Fisher King, anyone?). In honor of the fall season, they also shared in their love of Hygge, the Danish and Norwegian word that embodies the coziness, contentment, and feelings of wellness we create in our environments this time of year. Heather loves the Facebook group, The Hygge Nook, where you’ll find craft and recipe ideas, photos of cozy spaces and beautiful scenery shared from all corners of the world, and uplifting messages from a wonderful community. A lovely book on the ways of Hygge is The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen.
A bonus Sister-Love share we received from these two was a poem Katie wrote for Heather when they were kids, unbeknownst to Heather, and she read it as a surprise on Heather’s wedding day. We hope you enjoy all the good vibes from these two wonderful ladies!
For My Sister Heather Who In the Eighties…
Taught me how to ride my bike
Skin my knees,
(and how to lie to my parents about how I got hurt)
make bracelets and necklaces out of violets,
which to a little girl
are the best things in the world.
For my sister who in the eighties
told me about school
and that the “big guys”
wouldn’t tease me
and the teachers weren’t
so bad anyway.
Who helped me when I had to memorize
my phone number for school
and the number was just like a song
to be dialed over and over again.
Who in the eighties
told me secrets to be kept from
mom and dad
because they didn’t
need to know anyway.
Who taught me how to share
care
and understand,
that I was too old for baby games
and so was she.
